Valparaiso, IN - The Valparaiso Crusaders only scored in two innings on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game with IPFW, but Valpo tallied seven runs in both of those frames to outdistance IPFW, 14-4.
The Crusaders took advantage of IPFW pitching control problems in the second inning. Valpo parleyed two hit batsmen, two walks, a wild pitch, a few fielder's choices and a throwing error into five quick runs. Valpo right fielder Kyle Gaedele capped off the huge inning with a two run triple to right center. The Crusaders plated their seven runs on just two hits in the inning.
The Mastodons got one back in the top of the 4th inning as center fielder Kurt Dudley lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored catcher Cory Miller.
But in the bottom of the inning Valpo scratched out another lucky seven. Designated hitter Robbie Robinson, first baseman Paul Heinkel and center fielder Steven Scoby each drove in a pair of runs in the inning to basically put the game on ice.
IPFW second baseman Jordan Kohler extended his hit-streak to 11 games in the 5th inning with a lead-off homer to left. It was his first homer of the season.
The 'Dons got single runs in the 7th and 8th innings, but it wasn't enough.
Mastodon starter Samuel Walker couldn't get out of the second inning. He left the game after an inning and a third and was saddled with the loss (2-5), giving up six runs (four earned) on one hit.
The Crusaders (17-19) got six strong innings from starter Austen Siwiec. He picked up the win (1-2) surrendering two runs on three hits. He struck out four and walked three.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 7-27. The Mastodons return to Summit League action on Friday afternoon. hosting North Dakota State. IPFW is currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league with the Bison and Southern Utah.
