Mastodon Duo Hit Milestones in Marathon Match at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite a career-high 33 kills from Riley Rosneck and Becky Barrett eclipsing 1,000 digs in her career, Bellarmine defeated Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball 3-2 (27-25, 26-24, 22-25, 20-25, 17-15) on Saturday (Aug. 29).
Rosneck's 33 kills were not only a career-high for the junior, but also the fourth-most in a match in Mastodon history. That mark ranks behind Mastodon Hall of Famers Laura Douglas and Fabiana Souza and All-American Panna Ratkai.
Barrett needed just 13 digs to reach the 1,000-dig mark in her career and she reached that number with her first dig in the third set. She finished with a match-high 25 digs.
Haiden Means and Lili Smith split the setting duties on Saturday, dishing out 40 and 16 assists, respectively. Smith added 11 digs for a double-double. While Rosneck was the star offensively, she also added 18 digs. Trinity Rye pitched in 13 kills from the right side.
From start to finish, the match was as tight as they come. There were 43 ties and 17 lead changes across the five-set behemoth.
The Mastodons were at their best in sets three and four, which rightly was when Rosneck was at her best. She had 16 kills and two errors to hit .378 over the two sets. As a team, the 'Dons recorded 20 digs in the third and hit .324 in the fourth.
The Mastodons had a chance in the fifth, leading 13-10, but the pendulum swung the other way with a 4-0 run from the Knights.
Purdue Fort Wayne fell to 2-1 with the loss, while Bellarmine improved to 1-1. The Mastodons will head to Toledo on Tuesday (Sept. 1) for a 6 p.m. non-league matchup.
