
IPFW Finishes in Fifth Place at Summit League Championship

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Freshman Drew Imel fired a 74 on Tuesday, finishing in eighth place overall, while the Mastodon men's golf team posted a season-best 298 on the final day of the Summit League Championship in St. George, Utah. IPFW tied with Oakland for fifth place with a two-day, 54-hole team total of 918.
For the first time in 2010, IPFW broke the 300-mark, as each 'Don posted a round in the 70s. Thanks to the outstanding final round, the Mastodons earned their best finish at the conference tournament in program history.
In the team competition, the 'Dons finished three strokes ahead of Centenary and 10 strokes behind Southern Utah for fourth place. Oral Roberts captured its second straight conference tournament title after firing a 54-hole total of 885, finishing one stroke ahead of runner-up UMKC.
Individually, Imel, who began the final round four strokes off the overall lead, played to a top-10 finish for the first time in his career on Tuesday. The freshman ended the conference tournament leading the Mastodons with a 221 (+8).
In the middle of standings, three 'Dons finished tied for 28th place overall, as each scored a 233 (+20).
Junior Ryan Oblin fired a final round 74 to go with first day scores of 81-78. Freshman Bruno Carvalho shot a five-over 76 on Tuesday after rounds of 79-78 on Monday.
Finishing out the three-tie was Jon Balyeat, who ended his Mastodon career with a 78 on the final 18 holes, adding the seven-over round to scores to first day scores of 77-78.
Sophomore Jacob Bailey tied for 41st place overall with a two-day, 54-hole total of 240. Bailey shot a season-low, three-over 74 in the final round.
UMKC's Korbin Kuehn outplayed ORU's David Holtgrewe for medalist honors by virtue of winning a one-hole playoff.
After packing their bags and catching a flight home, IPFW will return to Fort Wayne and prepare for the 2010 fall campaign.
