MOUNT PLEASANT, MI. – In the 2010 regular season opener for IPFW's women's soccer team, the Mastodons suffered a 1-0 loss against Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon at the CMU Soccer Complex.
The Mastodons played hard defense throughout the match in the toe to toe midfield battle, but were unable to make it on the board.
Nicole Samuel had a great opportunity to put the Chippewas on the board with a little over 21 minutes into the game, but Mastodon freshman Erin Nayler wouldn't let the ball past her for the save.
Just seven minutes later, Nayler came to the rescue again preventing CMU from a 1-0 lead with a save off of Chippewas' Claire Horton's shot from just outside the box.
With a scoreless first period, CMU had a 10-0 edge in shots against IPFW and 6-0 advantage in corners.
Just over ten minutes into the second period, CMU got the 1-0 lead with a cross by Laura Twidle that went off Autumn Hawkins and then to Samuel who was able to dribble past Nayler putting the ball into the net.
Sophomore forward Arianne Mason had a 25-yard shot at the 71:40 mark for the 'Dons first shot of the match.
A few minutes later, the Chippewas tried to increase their lead, 2-0, with a shot by Bethany Allport but she was unable to get the ball past Nayler.
CMU outshot IPFW by an 18-1 count, while the Mastodons had five fouls and the Chippewas had seven.
IPFW returns to action on Thursday against Youngstown State at 7:00 p.m. at Hefner Stadium.
