Macomb, IL - The IPFW Mastodons evened their record in conference play on Friday evening with a 3-1 loss to the Western Illinois Leathernecks by scores of 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.
Maya Schlindwein had a team-best 14 kills, while Stephanie Lamberti and Haley Emenhiser each had nine in the losing effort. Tessa McGill had another big dig game, picking up 23 a match after setting a new school record with 47 against Ball State. Megan Steenhuysen had 10 digs to go along with a team-best 33 assists for the double-double effort.
The Mastodons had a blistering .412 attack percentage in the opening set, and trailed only briefly while using runs of 6-0 and 4-0 to run away with the opening set 25-17.
The Leathernecks turned the tables on the Mastodons in the second set, trailing only early in the set, and utilizing a string of points to lead 21-13. IPFW battled back to cut the deficit to four at 23-19, before the hosts scored two of the final three points of the set to send the match tied to the intermission between sets two and three.
IPFW opened the second set on a tear, jumping out to a quick 10-2 lead in the frame. The Mastodon lead was cut to five as late as 15-10 before the host Leathernecks kept chipping away at the lead, out-scoring IPFW 15-5 the rest of the way to take the third set 25-20.
The fourth, and eventual final, set saw the to teams battle back-and-forth, and were tied at 12-12 before the Leathernecks ran off five straight points to jump ahead 17-12. IPFW got to within three at 18-15, but a 7-3 run to end the set closed the door for the Mastodons.
Brooke Stittleburg led Western Illinois with 17 kills as Allison Gilbert had 11 and Katie Hosteng 10. Heather Smith dished out a match-high 41 assists, while picking up 21 digs. Hosteng also added a match-high eight blocks.
The Mastodons look to even their record on their current two-game road swing when the travel to Indianapolis, Indiana, to face off against the Jaguars of IUPUI with first serve slated for 7:00 PM.
