Cincinnati, OH - The IPFW Mastodons were swept by the Xavier Musketeers in the opening round of the Xavier University Invitational, 25-23, 25-18, 25-19.

For the fourth time in the five matches this season, the squad was led in kills by Maya Schlindwein, who had 10, as Stephanie Lamberti and Alli Hook each had six. Hook and Schlindwein each had three blocks, as Tessa McGill, the current Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, had a team best 11 digs in the loss.

In the opening set, Xavier was up 6-3 early in the match before the 'Dons ran off four straight points to take their first lead of the match at 7-6. The set remained close for the next 17 points, as the teams were deadlocked at 15 before the hosts scored four straight to jump ahead 19-15.

After using her final timeout of the set during the Musketeer run, Kelley Hartley Hutton's Mastodon squad responded from the 4-0 streak by scoring the next five to take a lead in the set 20-19. After a small Xavier run knotted the score at 22, Xavier scored three of the final four points of the set, with the hosts ending the frame on a Shannon Voors kill.

In the second set the Mastodons found themselves trailing 6-2 early, and could not climb their way out the early hole, cutting the deficit to as few as one at 13-12, before Xavier scored three straight, cruising to the 25-18 second-set win.

There were ten tie scores in the third set, with the last one coming at 12-12 after a kill by Megan Wiler, before Xavier scored seven of the next eight points to push their advantage to six at 19-13. The Musketeers kept their momentum , finishing the set with a six-point margin at 25-19.

Megan Steenhuysen dished out a team-best 19 assists, with McGill picking up the team's only service ace. Jen Milligan finished the match with eight digs, and Taryn Parker had two blocks.

Voors had match-highs in kills, 19, and attempts, 42, as Stephanie Vorherr had a contest-high 15 digs.

The Mastodons return to action on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM when the Mastodons face off against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
