ROCHESTER, Mich. - In the first conference-match of the season, the IPFW women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to the Oakland Grizzlies on Saturday evening in Rochester, Mich.
The Mastodons fall to 3-6-0 overall (0-1-0 Summit League) while the Grizzlies improve to 3-8-0 (1-0-0).
The Grizzlies opened up the game by coming out of the gate swinging. OU's Serena San Cartier recorded two shots in the first 10 minutes, but was denied by the Mastodon defense, including a save by freshman goalie, Krysta Hedrick.
After coming up short after several scoring opportunities, the Grizzlies made it on the board when Kyla Kellermann scored her fifth goal of the season in the 30th minute. After receiving a pass from Julianne Boyle, Kellermann took a shot from eight-yards out in order to beat Hedrick.
IPFW junior Lisa Underwood nearly tied the game in the 37th minute when she took a shot that was only denied by the post.
Junior Danielle Bishop followed up Underwood's attack by forcing a save by OU goalie, Anne Berschbach, on a shot less than a minute later.
The Grizzlies finished the first half the same way they started, by creating scoring opportunities, which the IPFW defense was able to withstand. Hedrick finished the half with three total saves in goal.
After taking nine total shots in the first half, the Grizzlies offense came out strong again in the second half, tallying seven total shots. However, the Dons' defense was able to stand strong, not allowing any second half goals.
IPFW's offense was unable to take advantage of their defense's strong play. Oakland's defense prevented IPFW's attackers from capitalizing on their three second half shots.
IPFW finished the game with seven total shots, while Oakland finished the game with 16 total shots.
Senior Tara O'Toole and Underwood each had two shots while Bishop had one shot on goal for the Mastodons. IPFW's defense was led by Hedrick, who recorded seven saves in goal.
The Mastodons return to action next Friday (Oct. 7) against UMKC at Hefner Soccer Stadium in Fort Wayne at 7 p.m.
