Mastodons Drop Heartbreaker to Kangaroos, 2-1

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In the home conference-match opener, the IPFW Mastodons suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the last two minutes of the match to a UMKC penalty kick.
Despite the loss, the Mastodons outplayed the Kangaroos throughout the match. The IPFW defense held UMKC to only six shots, with three on goal, while the 'Dons recorded a total of 16 shots, with six on goal. Also, the 'Dons had three goals that were called back due to offsides.
IPFW got on the board early when freshman Sydney Hoareau recorded her first collegiate goal off of a pass from junior teammate Arianne Mason.
The 'Dons continued to set the tone of the match and carried their 1-0 lead all the way to the 67th minute when the Kangaroos tied the match at 1-1. UMKC's Randi Simmons was able to head the ball past IPFW goalie, Kristen McFadden, with the help of Kaely Tott and Taylor Bare.
With less than a minute left, IPFW came close to tying the match off of Lisa Underwood's shot, but the 'Dons could not get the equalizer.
Hoareau recorded a total of two shots with two on goal and one goal, while Underwood had three shots with one on goal for the Mastodons. Juniors Arianne Mason and Rhea Proctor, along with senior Tara O'Toole each had two shots.
McFadden played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Mastodons and tallied one save while UMKC's Jami Finnell also played the full match as goalie and recorded five saves.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 3-7-0 overall and 0-2-0 in Summit League action.
The Mastodons will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 9) against South Dakota at 1 p.m. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Hefner Soccer Complex
