FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In the first-ever meeting between IPFW and South Dakota, the Mastodons dominated to the tune of 36 kills and nine blocks over a three-set sweep of the Coyotes, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22.
Emily Spencer knocked down a match-high 12 kills, while Haley Emenhiser had 10, and Jessie Manwaring added nine. Tessa McGill had a match-leading 21 digs, the 15th highest three-set total in program history.

The Mastodons led 8-5 early in the opening set, before the Coyotes clawed their way back, knotting the match at 13 apiece. After a timeout from head coach Kelley Hartley Hutton, the Mastodons out-scored USD 12-4 the rest of the way, closing the set by taking advantage of an attack error in the 25-17 IPFW victory.
IPFW never trailed in the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead, and behind the strong serving of Kendall Wienkes, scored six straight to have the Mastodons double-up on USD 16-8, before cruising to the 25-15 second-set win.
The Coyotes fought back, and had all of the momentum at the beginning of the third set, leading 12-4 through the first 16 points of the set. The Mastodons slowly climbed back into the contest, putting together a trio of 2-0 runs before Emily Spencer served the 'Dons to a 6-0 streak that knotted the match at 16 apiece.
The teams found themselves tied at 17, 18, and 19, before Wienkes once again came to the serve, and the 'Dons scored five consecutive points to lead 24-19. The first two tries at match-point went to the Coyotes, before a service error ended the hopes of a comeback for the visitors.
South Dakota was led by Tahnee Reed who had seven kills, while Tori Kroll had 20 assists. Carol Logato led the team with nine digs while Natalie Walseth and Amber Aschoff each had four blocks.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday evening, when the squad hosts the Kangaroos of UMKC with first-serve slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Gates Sports Center.
