BOX SCORE
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW head coach Kelley Hartley Hutton picked up her 400th career coaching victory on Saturday evening, as the Mastodons topped the Kangaroos of UMKC in four sets, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20.
Hartley Hutton, now 400-205 for her career (66.1 percent), has 263 wins while at IPFW, in addition to the 131 wins from her time at Walsh, and six from her lone year at Robert Morris.
For the match the Mastodons were led by Emily Spencer who had 14 kills, as three others, Alli Hook, Megan Wiler, and Haley Emenhiser, each had six kills in the win. Alli Hook had a match-high nine blocks, the third-highest four-set match total in program history, which also moves her into a tie with Janna Plummer (1988-91) into 13th place in career blocks at IPFW, now with 288.
Megan Steenhuysen dished out 37 assists, while Tessa McGill and Spencer each had 17 digs, and Jen Milligan 16. Jessie Manwaring had four blocks for IPFW, while Kendall Wienkes picked up five service aces in a balanced IPFW win.
The Mastodons came out sluggish to start, and the feisty UMKC squad (6-13, 0-9 Summit League) wasted no time in taking advantage, using a 4-0 run to turn a 7-6 IPFW lead into a 10-7 UMKC advantage, as the visitors would not trail again in the frame. Another 4-0 run put in a gap that the Mastodons could not overcome, as the 'Roos took the opening frame 25-20.
UMKC led 4-3 in the second set before the Mastodons scored six straight points behind the serving of Milligan, giving the 'Dons a 9-4 advantage. The Kangaroos would get only as close as one the rest of the way, at 11-10, before IPFW pulled away for the 25-18 second-set win.
The third set was a back-and-forth effort that saw a dozen ties and six lead changes. The teams were tied at every increment from 18 until 23, where the 'Dons took the win by scoring the final two points of the frame, giving IPFW the third-set victory by a score of 25-23.
The Kangaroos jumped ahead early in the fourth and final set, leading 5-1 before the Mastodon offense awoke in the frame, going on a 14-3 run to give the Mastodons a seven-point, 15-8 cushion. The 'Roos would only come to within four the rest of the way as IPFW cruised to the 25-20 decisive-set win.
Emily Lucas had a match-high 16 kills for UMKC, while Ella Meier had a 23-dig, 34-assist double-double, as Nicole Kerkman added 21 digs.
The Mastodons take to the road following its three-match homestand, heading to Macomb, Illinois, to face off against the Leathernecks of Western Illinois University on Monday evening to open a four-match road swing which includes trips to Rochester, Michigan; Fargo, North Dakota; and Brookings, South Dakota.
