HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - A team score of 297 moved the Mastodon squad into second place, just five strokes off of the lead pace in round two of three at the St. John's Invitational.
The Mastodons, currently sitting at 597 overall, trail the Stetson Hatters and their 592 overall score with one more round remaining at The Mission Inn Resort. Appalachian State is in third place in a field that includes the likes of Western Kentucky and Boston College.
Sophomore Drew Imel led the IPFW lineup in Saturday action with an even-par 72 to climb into 10th place on the overall leaderboard. Following Imel was senior Ryan Olbin's 73, a vast improvement over yesterday's showing in rainy, blustery conditions. The captain currently sits in a tie for 26th place.
Bruno Carvalho and Tomaz Pinheiro each posted rounds of 76 in round two play. Carvalho currently ranks T-20th while Pinheiro sits in a tie for 15th overall.
Curtis Coverstone, who posted a career-best 72 yesterday carded a 78 today to finish fifth in the IPFW lineup as the sophomore stands in a tie for 13th place overall.
Junior Adam Turney paced the IPFW individuals as the fired a two-over 74 to move to a tie for 49th place. Patrick Kundenreich moved to T-54th place with a 79 while John McMillen followed with a 79 of his own to go to 63rd overall. Freshman Mitch Bellam posted an 83 and Jacob Bailey carded a 79 to round out the IPFW squad.
Final round action of the St. John's Invitational tees off tomorrow as the Mastodons chase their second tournament championship in Billy King's short tenure as head coach.
