PRIMM, Nev. - Sophomore Drew Imel fired rounds of 74 and 73 Monday, leaving him in a tie for 6th place, well within striking distance for an individual Summit League title as the Mastodons currently stand fifth as a team in the conference tournament event.
Imel's 74-73 day on the grueling Desert Course of Primm Valley Golf Club is three over par on the 7131-yard course. The sophomore opened play with a double-bogey on the 10th hole and a bogey on 12, before posting birdies on 13, 15 and 18 to round out an even-par first nine. In all, Imel tallied seven birdies, including a pair of them on holes 7 and 18 during his rounds.?
The Bluffton, Ind. native is just eight strokes off of the lead pace, set by UMKC's Will Robson. Imel's record-chasing round will begin at 8:40 a.m. PDT tomorrow morning.?
Senior Ryan Olbin was the next lowest score in the Mastodon lineup. He posted steady rounds of 74 and 76 behind three birdies and 24 pars, as the captain checked in with a tie for 20th place.?
Sophomore Bruno Carvalho carded rounds of 76 in each 18 today and currently rests two strokes and four spots behind Olbin in a tie for 24th. Carvalho first round saw a trio of birdies in the morning session, but his afternoon scorecard was plagued by a pair of double-bogeys on holes eight and 18 as the Pelotas, Brazil native fell to 24th.?
Currently sharing 27th place, sophomore Tomaz Pinheiro saw a one stroke improvement from the morning to afternoon as his 77-76 has him at 9 for the tournament. Triple-bogies on hole one in the morning and hole 14 in the afternoon soured an otherwise sharp scorecard. He posted three birdies and 26 pars on the day and has the potential to propel the IPFW team up the leaderboards as the fourth scorer.?
Playing in his first conference championship as a collegian, freshman Patrick Kundenreich settled into a share of 33rd place with rounds of 78 and 77 in day one action. The big hitter from Yorktown, Ind. is currently tied for 33rd place after posting better scores in the afternoon round on three of his morning bogey holes. Kundenreich has tallied four birdies thus far in championship play.?
