Valparaiso, IN - In an highly offensive match, the Mastodons came up short, falling 4-2 against the Valparaiso Crusaders at Brown Field on Sunday evening in Valparaiso, Indiana.
After opening the season on Friday with a 1-0 win over Indiana State and with the loss against Valpo, IPFW drops to 1-1 overall.
Just a little over two minutes into the first half junior Rhea Proctor took a shot that went wide right, preventing the Mastodons from getting on the board early in the game. Minutes later, Proctor stepped up for the 'Dons again with another shot but it went high.
The Crusaders were able to withstand the early offensive pressure from the Mastodons and then stepped up with their own attack. After two unsuccessful corner kicks, the third time was a charm for the Crusaders. Brooke Henderson was able to score off of a header from Trisha Wldecki's corner kick to give Valpo the 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
In the 35th minute, VU managed to score off of a shot from the top of the box by Luisa Desario, with the help of Rachel Hoaglin.
A little over a minute later, the duo of Hoaglin and Desario struck again. The Crusaders quickly increased the lead to 3-0 after Desario had a cross to Hoaglin who got the ball over the head of IPFW goalie Jessica Schein.
After the offensive outburst by the Crusaders, IPFW was able to chip into the lead before halftime when junior Tylar Allison's first goal of the season and the 'Dons first goal of the game came off of a free kick from 35 yards out to get within two with 38:53 on the clock.
Both teams came out firing in the second half. IPFW had two corner kicks by Allison and a shot by sophomore Caroline Castelli within the first four minutes after returning to the field. VU followed with two shots and one corner kick a minute later.
In the 64th minute, senior Tara O'Toole was able to put the ball into the far corner of the net from 15 yards out after a pass into the box from Proctor to bring the score to 3-2.
The Crusaders refused to let the Mastodons stay within one when Casey Pedersen scored off of a header in the box off of a thrown in by Abby Kenyon to bring VU's lead and the final score to 4-2 in the 71st minute.
In the match, Valparaiso led in shots (15-11), corner kicks (7-4) and fouls (13-7).
The Mastodons offensive attack was led by junior Alaina Jones tallied three shots while Allison had two shots with two on goal and one goal.
Schein played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Mastodons with three saves.
IPFW will return to the road in a week against Toledo on Sunday (Aug. 28). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Scott Park in Toledo, Ohio.
