Fort Wayne, IN - The first exhibition match of the 2011 season for the IPFW women's soccer team resulted in a 2-2 tie against Wright State on Saturday evening in Fort Wayne at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
In a match broken up into three 30-minute periods, the Mastodons waited until the final period to unleash their offensive power.
During the first two periods, the Raiders were able to put two shots into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. At the 23:17 mark, WSU's Brittany Persaud was able to beat IPFW senior goalkeeper, Kristen McFadden, to the far post off of a pass from teammate Bekah Bonny. With 35:16 on the clock, Navneet Aujla, with help from Emilie Fillion, was able to put the Raiders on the board again for WSU's final goal of the match.
After trailing 2-0 in the second period, the 'Dons had their first goal in the 69th minute. Junior Kelcey Thompson received the ball on the right side of the field and dribbled the ball down the sideline. With a defender closing in, Thompson crossed the ball into the box toward the goal and beat WSU's goalie, Anna Nock, far post for the goal.
The Mastodons continued to press the ball into their attacking half of the field during the third period. After a mad scramble in front of the Raider goal, junior Alaina Jones gained possession of the ball inside the penalty box and was able to sneak a pass to junior teammate Lisa Underwood. Underwood then beat the keeper to the near post and leveled the score at 2-2 in the 76th minute.
Over the last 10 minutes, both goalkeepers made crucial saves to preserve the tie, including a save by senior IPFW goalie, Jessica Schein. Schein, a Butler transfer, prevented a breakaway goal by WSU with only four minutes remaining in the match.
IPFW ended the match with 14 shots, which including four on goal, and WSU totaled six shots with five on goal. The Raiders committed 10 fouls with IPFW committing eight fouls.
The Mastodons will return to the field in an exhibition match on Wednesday (Aug. 10) against Butler. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. at Hefner in Fort Wayne.
