FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW bench out-scored the Southern Utah bench 40-to-10 on Tuesday evening, as the Mastodons opened the 2012 calendar year with a 79-58 victory over the Thunderbirds, snapping a season-long three-game losing streak for IPFW.
The win improves the IPFW record to 8-6 overall, and 2-3 in the Summit League. Southern Utah evens its record at 7-7 on the year an 2-2 in league play.
Trey McCorkle and Frank Gaines scored 18 and 12 points, each, to lead the 'Dons; however, it was the depth off of the bench of 11 points from Michael Kibiloski, 10 from Mario Hines, nine from Justin Jordan, and eight from Isaiah McCray, that led IPFW to the 21-point win.
Hines pulled down nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double, while Frank Gaines added eight. Jonny Marlin dished out five assists, with Hines giving out three scores, as Jason Smeathers had a game-high three steals.
Southern Utah scored first with a Matt Massey jumper 47 seconds into the game, taking a 2-0 lead, the first and last lead for the visiting Thunderbirds, with the Mastodons scoring the game's next seven points, five from McCorkle, to lead 7-2 three and a half minutes later.
The first-half lead grew to as many as nine on a McCray three-point basket with 9:14 to play; but the feisty Thunderbird squad would not go down without a fight, clawing to within two at 24-22 with 5:09 to play in the game.
The Mastodons responded to seeing their lead cut to just two with a 11-4 run, capped by a three-pointer from Kibiloski on his birthday, as IPFW took a seven-point, 36-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Southern Utah once again fought back, trailing by three at 42-39 after a Damon Heuir lay-up, but once again IPFW fought to push its lead, leading by double-figures for the first time in the game after a Jordan three-pointer with 8:38 to play in the game gave the hosts a 55-45 advantage.
The lead ballooned up to as many as 21 on three occasions, including after a Hines dunk with 48 seconds to play in the game, giving the 'Dons their lopsided conference win.
For the fourth time this season IPFW hit over half of its shots, making 31-of-58 from the field (53.4 percent), while converting on 6-of-15 (40.0 percent) from long range, and 11-of-16 from the charity stripe (68.8 percent).
The Mastodons remain at home for their next three games, hosting IUPUI on Thursday, January 5, with a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Memorial Coliseum.
