I-69 Rivalry Renews on Thursday

PRE-GAME NOTES
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Interstate 69 rivalry between the IPFW Mastodons and IUPUI Jaguars renews on Thursday evening, as the two teams will face off in a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Memorial Coliseum. The game features two of the NCAA Division I's top 22 scorers, as IPFW's Frank Gaines stands 21st in the NCAA rankings, and IUPUI's Alex Young 22nd.

SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
After starting the season 2-8, the IUPUI Jaguars come into tonight's game with an even 8-8 overall record, riding a six-game win streak, including an 83-74 overtime win at home against UMKC on Tuesday.
The Jaguars are 0-5 away from home this year, and 8-3 in their home arena.
Leading the way for IUPUI is senior forward Alex Young who averages 19.7 points per game, including 43 points at home on December 10 against Western Kentucky, which stands as the highest individual scoring effort this season in NCAA Division I.
Stephen Thomas averages 11.2 points per game for first-year head coach Todd Howard's squad, with Ian Chiles pouring in 9.4 points, Lyonell Gaines 7.6, and Christian Siakam 7.2.
Young pulls down a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game, while his 18 blocks and 19 steals are either a team-high, or tied
for best on the squad. Thomas adds 19 steals to tie for the team lead, while Chiles' 12 blocked shots are second on the squad.
AT THE SUMMIT
• On Jan. 3, The Summit League ranked No. 13 in the Collegiate Basketball News RPI (rpiratings.com) and No. 15 in the Sagarin Ratings. The Summit League's peak positions were No. 11 in the RPI and No. 12 in the Sagarin Ratings, both as recently as Dec. 19. Last season, the league finished No. 18 in the Sagarin and No. 21 in the RPI.
• Through Jan. 2, The Summit League has a winning percentage of .500 or better against 15 of the 17 mid-major conferences its teams have played this season.
• Through Jan. 2, The Summit League owns a .511 winning percentage against non-league Division I opposition and a .590 winning percentage against all non-league competition. Those clips are on pace to shatter the previous best marks on record (since 1998-99), surpassing the .447 D1 winning percentage and .491 overall clip, both set during the 2001-02 season.
• The Summit League had three players among the NCAA's Top 11 in scoring average (most recent Dec. 19 rankings), more than any other Division I conference. IUPUI's Alex Young owned the nation's highest single-game scoring total this season (43) while Oakland's Reggie Hamilton was tied for second (41).
• Oakland's Reggie Hamilton was named as the Lou Henson Award national player of the week by CollegeInsider.com. The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball.
• IUPUI's Alex Young remains as the top active scorer in Division I basketball and enters the week with 1,930 points (through Jan. 2) to rank 12th on The Summit League's all-time list.

per game, averaging 19.7 per contest. He has reached the 20-point plateau in nine of the team's 14 games this season
LAST TIME OUT
The IPFW bench out-scored the Southern Utah bench 40-to-10 on Tuesday evening, as the Mastodons opened the 2012 calendar year with a 79-58 victory over the Thunderbirds, snapping a season-long three-game losing streak for IPFW.
Trey McCorkle and Frank Gaines scored 18 and 12 points, each, to lead the 'Dons; however, it was the depth off of the bench of 11 points from Michael Kibiloski, 10 from Mario Hines, nine from Justin Jordan, and eight from Isaiah McCray, that led IPFW to the 21-point win.
Hines pulled down nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double, while Frank Gaines added eight. Jonny Marlin dished out five assists, with Hines giving out three scores, as Jason Smeathers had a game-high three steals.
