BROOKINGS, S.D. - The second seeded IPFW Mastodons fell in the Championship match of the 2012 Summit League Tournament by a 2-0 score to the Oakland Grizzlies, the tournament top seed and defending tournament champion, on Sunday afternoon.
For their efforts, Tylar Allison, Rachel Good, and Sydney Hoareau were each named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Mastodons were out-shot 18-12 in the loss, as the Grizzlies also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The teams played through a scoreless first 35 minutes of action before the experienced Golden Grizzly squad was able to use Serena San Cartier goal with under 10 minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead, one that would last until the halftime.
The second half saw a number of strong IPFW chances; however, it was Oakland who reached the scoreboard when Nicole DeLuca added an insurance score, giving the top seeds a 2-0 cushion.
The two-score advantage would hold up late, despite two shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of play, as Oakland held on for the 2-0 victory.
Arianne Mason had a team-best three shots on goal, while Rachel Good and Cassie Egle each added two shots in the losing effort. Freshman goalkeeper Sam Pavlika picked up a match-high six saves.
The loss ends the season for IPFW with a school-record 10 wins, and a 10-8-1 overall record, just the second winning season in program history.
