Mastodons Fall in BracketBuster Opener to Colonels

RICHMOND, Ky. - For the second time in the last three games, IPFW junior guard Frank Gaines tied a career-high with 30 points, pulling down a team-high five rebounds in the process, as the Mastodons fell in their Sears BracketBuster opener to the Eastern Kentucky Colonels by a 78-69 final score.
Gaines scores his 30 on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, 3-of-5 from long range, and 7-of-10 on free throw attempts. Justin Jordan scored eight points while dishing out four assists, while Michael Kibiloski added seven. Four players, Gaines, Jonny Marlin, Jordan, and Joe Edwards each picked up two steals, while Marlin added three assists in the loss.
Eastern Kentucky jumped ahead early, leading by as many as eight at 13-5 with 14:27 to play in the first half. IPFW clawed its way back with a 6-0 run, as Gaines scored 14 straight IPFW points; however, it was a John Peckinpaugh lay-in with 7:09 on the clock that tied the score at 20 apiece. Justin Jordan followed with a lay-up before Gaines made two free throws to cap a 13-5 IPFW run, giving the 'Dons a 26-22 lead.
IPFW's advantage reached as many as five after a Trey McCorkle jumper with 3:09 to play, giving IPFW a 30-25 lead, but EKU out-scored IPFW 11-3 over the final three minutes to take a 36-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.
EKU jumped out to a 16-6 run to open the second half to lead by 14, and IPFW was playing catch-up the rest of the way. The Colonel's lead reached 14 again with 67-53, before the Mastodons chipped away at the deficit, but could only get to within seven the rest of the way in the loss.
IPFW made half of its 56 shots, but just 6-of-16 from long range (37.5 percent) and 7-of-13 from the charity stripe.
Eastern Kentucky was led by Jaron Jones who scored 22 points while pulling down nine boards, while Joshua Jones scored 17 and D'Mitri Riggs added 12, all in the second half.
The Mastodons return to action on February 23 when the team travels to Vermillion, South Dakota, to face off against the Coyotes of the University of South Dakota in an 8 p.m. tip-off.
