KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Behind a 28-point effort from Trey McCorkle and 26 from Frank Gaines, the IPFW Mastodons clinched a spot in the 2012 Summit League Tournament with a 76-73 thrilling win over the UMKC Kangaroos on Saturday evening.
McCorkle scored his career-high by making 13-of-14 shots from the field, the fifth best single-game shooting game in the country this season. Gaines went 8-of-16 from the field, and 10-of-12 at the charity stripe, including two big free throws with five seconds left that gave IPFW a three-point advantage in the closing portion of the contest.
Justin Jordan added 10 for IPFW, while John Peckinpaugh scored six. McCorkle and Gaines each pulled down seven rebounds, as IPFW was out-rebounded 27-to-24 in the contest. Jonny Marlin dished out five assists, Peckinpaugh four, and Antwaun Boyd three, with the Mastodons sporting a 17-to-8 assist-to-turnover ratio.
The game had nine ties and 16 lead changes overall, as the largest lead by either team was 10, when the Mastodons rattled off 11 consecutive points to take a 17-7 lead with 13:12 to play in the opening half. The Kangaroos quickly fought back, and cut the deficit to one at 24-23 six minutes later.
UMKC would tie the score at 37, but a Gaines lay-in with 24 seconds before halftime sent the 'Dons into the locker room with a 39-37 advantage.
IPFW's lead would not last two minutes into the second half before the Kangaroos used their home court advantage to pull ahead by five after Reggie Chamberlain made all three free throws after being fouled taking a long-range shot, giving the hosts a 50-45 lead.
The margin never reached more than five the rest of the way, as IPFW took its first lead since early in the half with 6:17 to play after Gaines made a lay-in from a Peckinpaugh assist.
Over the final six minutes, the score would be tied five times, and the lead would change hands eight more times, the last coming on McCorkle's 13th and final lay-in, giving IPFW a one-point, 74-73 lead.
On UMKC's next possession the 'Dons got a defensive rebound, and Gaines made a pair of free throws to give IPFW a three-point advantage, as UMKC would not get a shot off in the last five seconds, clinching the win for the Mastodons.
IPFW was 29-of-52 shooting in the game, a percentage of 55.8, but made just 2-of-11 from long range, with Jordan converting on both of the team's triples. The squad also converted on 16-of-18 of its free throws, the second-highest free throw shooting percentage this season.
UMKC was led by Reggie Chamberlain who scored 26 points, while Thomas Staton added 20 in the season-ending game for the Kangaroos.
The Mastodons will now face off against top seed Oral Roberts in the first game of the Summit League Tournament on March 3, with a 7 p.m. EST tip-off.
