Women's Volleyball Releases 2012 Schedule

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Six games against teams that advanced to last seasons' NCAA Tournament dot the 2012 IPFW women's volleyball schedule, as the Mastodons fill face off against teams from eight different conferences, including five against the Mid-American Conference, and one team each from the Big Ten, and the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
After spending the first 10 games of last season on the road, the Mastodons waste no time in seeing their first home game for the 2012 season, as the squad will be hosting Murray State, Cleveland State, and Kent State. Murray State opens the slate on August 24 with a 7 p.m. scheduled first-serve. Last season the Racers went 8-23, all eight wins coming in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Mastodons and Cleveland State (21-8 last season) meet up at 1 p.m., as the Vikings finished second in the Horizon League Tournament a year ago. The tournament is capped off with a match-up against the Kent State Golden Flashes (12-19) in a 7 p.m. first-serve.
The Mastodons stay at home for their first non-tournament opponent when the Ball State Cardinals - who finished 25-8 last season and lost in the NCAA First Round to Louisville – come to the Gates Sports Center for a 7 p.m. start to the match.
The UIC invitational follows for IPFW, where the 'Dons will face off at 6 p.m. against Eastern Michigan to open the tournament. Last year the Eagles of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) went 21-11, falling in the first round of the MAC Tournament. On September 1, the 'Dons will see tournament host UIC (18-15) of the Horizon League at 1 p.m., before coming back in the evening to face off against UT-Arlington (12-19), who finished an even 8-8 in the Southland Conference a year ago.
A mid-week game against Horizon League member Wright State (6-23) follows at 7 p.m. on September 4, before the Mastodons will face their toughest test of the season at the Michigan State Invitational. The 'Dons open the tournament against host Michigan State at 7 p.m. on September 7, as the Spartans advanced to the second round of last years' NCAA Tournament, falling to Texas. On Saturday the 8th, IPFW will open the day at 10 a.m. against the Georgia Bulldogs, who finished 11-19 a season ago. The tournament concludes at 5:30 p.m. against the Albany Great Danes, who won the America East Conference last year with a 21-9 overall record, falling to Florida State in the NCAA Tournament First Round.
The squad opens their Summit League season on September 14 at Oakland in a 7 p.m. first serve, before staying in Michigan to face off a day later against the Central Michigan Chippewas, a team that finished strong in the MAC, winning the league tournament title before dropping their NCAA First Round game to Illinois, last season's NCAA Runner-Up.
The 'Dons host a mid-week Summit League game against IUPUI at 7 p.m. on September 18, before making a weekend road trip to the University of South Dakota on September 21, and to UMKC on September 23.
The following weekend sees IPFW play host to South Dakota State and North Dakota State; the Bison representing last season's Summit League Tournament Champion, setting the table for a Friday, Oct. 5 game at Nebraska Omaha.
A home game against Western Illinois on Monday, Oct. 8 is followed by another home game four days later against Oakland. The squad takes its final road trip of the season on October 16 at Toledo, who went 10-18 last season in the MAC.
Back-to-back home games on Oct. 19 (UMKC) and 20 (South Dakota) follow, with senior night scheduled for Nov. 3 against Nebraska Omaha at 7 p.m.
