FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In a terrifyingly tight match, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team came away with a five-set victory over IU Indy on Saturday (Oct. 31).
The spooky costumes in the crowd did not scare away the Mastodons on Halloween afternoon, as they were able to "eek" out the 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13 win over the Jaguars.
Riley Rosneck was the skeleton key to IU Indy's proverbial lock on defense. She played at an elite level, finishing with 28 kills, after being recognized for joining the 1,000 kill club prior to the match. Miona Dimitric (12), Mya Plemons (11) and Trinity Rye (10) all joined Rosneck in double-figures.
Along with some pumpkin spice and everything nice, Haiden Means dished out a career-high 60 assists for Purdue Fort Wayne. That is a top-20 mark in the country this season.
IU Indy's offense rolled in set one with a .441 hitting percentage, but the Mastodons remained calm and unfrightened, holding the Jaguars to just .100 in the second. In the town they call home, the Mastodons got six kills from Dimitric and five from Rosneck in the second set to even the score.
The Jaguars answered with a 25-23 third set, despite the 'Dons leading 21-19. If Riley Rosneck was a Halloween costume, it certainly would have frightened the Jaguars in the fourth set. She had 10 of the Mastodons' 20 kills in the frame. Plemons added five of her 11 in the fourth.
In the fifth, the Mastodon defense sent shivers down the Jaguars' spines. After trailing 6-2, the 'Dons took advantage of a witch's brew of IU Indy errors and a kill from Rosneck. The Jaguars reached 10 first, but Rye and Plemons both had kills before Dimitric and Plemons combined for a block to go up 11-10. A few points later, the two teams were knotted at 13. Rosneck got a kill, then Becky Barrett dropped in an ace that will haunt the Jaguars until their rematch.
Barrett dug out 21 attacks, while Dimitric did the same for 17, a career-high.
IU Indy fell to 11-14, 6-6 in the Horizon League while Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 12-13, 6-6 in the HL. The two squads will reunite for a less spooky matchup on Tuesday (Nov. 3) at 7 p.m. in the Jaguars' new arena in Indianapolis.
