KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The IPFW Mastodons improved to 2-0 in the exhibition season with a 2-0 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos on Friday evening.
The 'Dons were efficient in their offensive output, scoring on two-of-three shots on goals, had just six shots overall, and did not attempt a corner kick in the contest.
IPFW jumped on the board quickly in the game when Brooke Bishir found Sydney Hoareau who caught the Bronco goalkeeper out of position for the opening goal of the contest. The goal was the team's fourth shot of the contest, as IPFW was able only to put one more attempt at the goal, which missed high.
Tessa Edwards took advantage of a missed clear attempt by the WMU defense, and hit the ball low into the goal for the two-nill lead with just under 30 minutes to play in the contest.
Freshman goalkeeper Sam Pavlika made three saves in the final 30 minutes to secure the win, as the Broncos peppered the IPFW
goal with five shots and two corner kicks over the final half-hour of the contest.
The clean slate gives the Mastodons an overall scoring margin of 5-1 in the first two exhibition contests, with a Sunday afternoon tilt against the Northern Illinois Huskies to follow for the team's final exhibition of the season.
IPFW's regular season opens on August 17 when the squad plays host to the St. Joseph's (Ind.) Pumas at 7 p.m.
