FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Valparaiso Crusaders put in a goal just 1:36 into the first overtime to top the Mastodons 1-0 in non-conference action on Sunday evening at the Hefner Soccer Field.
Freshman goalkeeper Sam Pavlika had a career-high eight saves in the loss, including making a crucial save late in the first half to keep the scoreless draw.
The Crusaders (5-2-1) dominated play early, and peppered Pavlika with five save attempts in the opening period, keeping the visitors from northwest Indiana off the board.
Six minutes into the second half IPFW had a strong scoring chance when Arianne Mason hit the post on a shot, and IPFW (3-4) nearly scored again 15 minutes later when Rachel Good hit a shot past Valpo goalkeeper Kristen Manski; however, Crusader defender Jenny Fassbinder saved the game when she came in from the far side, and knocked the ball away as it was sitting halfway on the goal line.
IPFW had five shot attempts in the second period, and had another in the overtime, before Rachel Hoaglin found Rita Craven near the goal, who beat Pavlika far post.
This season, every one of IPFW's four losses have come by 1-0 scores, as the 'Dons have been outscored by just one goal on the year 6-5.
The Mastodons return to action on Thursday, September 20 when the squad hosts the Goshen College Maple Leafs in a 7 p.m. kickoff at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
