IPFW Ends Weekend with 3-0 Win over UMKC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The IPFW women's volleyball team improved to 13-3 overall and 3-1 in the Summit League after defeating the UMKC Kangaroos 3-0 on Sunday afternoon (25-17, 25-17, 25-15).
Emily Spencer and Kendall Wienkes led the Mastodons to victory by recording 13 and 11 kills respectively. Spencer chipped in with nine digs, just missing a double-double performance and Wienkes did her part with seven digs.
Other Mastodons impacting the match included Megan Steenhuysen with 33 assists and Hailie Ripley who ended the day with seven blocks.
IPFW got off to a 4-0 start in the opening set, capitalizing on two UMKC attack errors. The Mastodons extended the lead to 7-1 which forced the Kangaroos to use a timeout. After the break UMKC settled down and cut the lead to 8-6. IPFW hit a groove offensively midway through the set and once again built a strong lead. Kendall Wienkes sent a kill into the court that pushed the score to 17-11, and it was Wienkes once again who put away the Kangaroos 25-17.
The second set was close at the start as the game was tied at 7-7. The 'Dons led by just two points near the middle of the set 12-10, but they took control of the game by going on two, three-point runs. Multiple UMKC errors gave IPFW a 25-17 win as they went up 2-0 on the Kangaroos.
The Mastodons once again got out to a quick start in the third set by grabbing a 3-0 lead. The score moved to 10-5 and then 15-10 before IPFW took complete control with a 5-3 run that pushed the score to 20-13. Hailie Ripley recorded two kills down the stretch and one final UMKC error gave IPFW a 25-15 victory.
The Mastodons will return to action with home matches against South Dakota State and North Dakota State.
