Mastodons End Tournament with 3-0 Sweep Over Albany

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Mastodons ended the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational with a 2-1 record after defeating Albany 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19). IPFW is now 9-2 overall entering Summit League play.
Jessie Manwaring and Emily Spencer picked up where they left off against Georgia as the twosome led IPFW to victory over Albany 3-0. Spencer recorded a match-high 15 kills while Manwaring chipped in with 10. Spencer was a double-double machine in East Lansing as she added 10 digs to record her sixth double-double of the season.
Megan Steenhuysen once again played a great game for IPFW by recording 41 assists in a three set match. The senior added seven digs, four kills and two service aces against the Danes.
The defensive charge was led by the senior duo of Tessa McGill and Jessie Manwaring. McGill ended the match with 19 digs and Manwaring did her part with a match-high six blocks. Kendall Wienkes also impacted the match with three blocks, three kills and six digs.
The Mastodons opened up a 5-2 lead in the first set and they expanded that lead to 17-12 midway through the game to gain control of the match. Emily Spencer made two big kills down the stretch and Steenhuysen set up the rest of the teams with 12 assists as the 'Dons grabbed set one 25-18.
Set two was more of the same as IPFW once again jumped out to a 5-2 advantage. IPFW never trailed as Emily Spencer pushed the 'Dons to a 25-18 victory with two clutch kills toward the end of the set.
IPFW trailed Albany 14-11 in the third set before mounting a comeback that tied the game at 14-14. The Mastodons scored three straight after the tie and would never trail again as they took the final set 25-19.
Summit League action begins on Sept. 14 for the women's volleyball team as the Mastodons travel to Rochester, Michigan to face Oakland at 7 p.m.
