Box Score
VERMILLION, S.D. – The IPFW women's basketball team was limited to just 17 points in the second half which led to an 82-51 loss at South Dakota. The Mastodons are now 6-12 overall with a 2-4 mark in Summit League action.
Four key factors led to Thursday night's outcome as the Coyotes won their eighth game of the season. The Coyotes won the points in the paint battle 40-12, second chance points 22-7, bench points 29-2, and also outrebounded IPFW 43-22.
The Mastodons only trailed by three points at halftime (37-34), but the second half belonged to South Dakota as they outscored IPFW 45-17 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Amanda Hyde scored a game-high 20 points to lead IPFW. Hyde shot 5-for-11 from the floor and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Stefanie Mauk added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds and Haley Seibert poured in nine points, all coming in the first half.
The Coyotes had four players reach double figures as Nicole Seekamp, Polly Harrington, Tempestt Wilson, and Margaret McCloud all impacted the game for South Dakota. Seekamp and Wilson hurt IPFW from the perimeter scoring 18 and 15 points respectively while the duo of Harrington and McCloud beat up IPFW in the paint to the tune of 16 points and 14.
IPFW held a three point lead five minutes into the contest after Rachel Mauk buried a 3-point field goal. The hot shooting from the outside for IPFW would quickly turn cold as the Coyotes went on a 16-0 run after the field goal which put them in front 26-13 with 8:04 to play in the opening half.
IPFW showed toughness on the road as they ended the first half on a 15-3 run in the final 5:37 to cut the South Dakota lead to just three at the half. Amanda Hyde sparked the comeback by scoring eight straight points for the 'Dons.
The start of the second half killed IPFW as the 'Dons gave up a 10-0 run to South Dakota in the opening five minutes of action. Erin Murphy ended the run with a pair of free throws and Amanda Hyde chipped in with a jumper on the following possession making the score 47-38.
South Dakota held the nine point edge for the first part of the second half, but the Coyotes got the ball inside for the remainder of the half which led them to victory. Back-to-back layups from Harrington made IPFW drop defenders in the paint and South Dakota adjusted to drill back-to-back three pointers which pushed the lead to 16. With five minutes to play the lead had jumped to 24, and the final buzzer sounded with South Dakota winning 82-51.
IPFW will return to action with a game at Kansas City on Saturday, Jan. 19. The Kangaroos were defeated by Oakland earlier this afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST.
