Mastodons Look for Road Win at Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The IPFW women's basketball team will end the weekend with a game at Kansas City on Saturday, Jan. 19. The game will begin at 3 p.m.
SCOUTING THE KANGAROOS
Kansas City is 5-13 overall with a 1-4 mark in Summit League action. The Kangaroos most recently lost to Oakland on Jan. 17 46-55, but they recorded their lone league win of the season at home vs. South Dakota 60-56. The Roos have lost nine out of their last 10 as they have been forced to play without Kim Nezianya who has been limited to just seven games due to a knee injury.
Eilise O'Connor has picked up the scoring load with Nezianya missing time. O'Connor is scoring 16.1 points per game and she also leads the team in assists. Three other Kangaroos average five points per game, making O'Connor the focal point of the offense.

ALL-TIME SERIES
IPFW leads the all-time series over Kansas City 6-5. IPFW won the first matchup of the season a year ago at home 82-76, but the Kangaroos evened the series with a home win over IPFW 79-62. The first meeting between these two programs was played during the 2007-08 season. IPFW won the first contest 62-51.
LAST TIME OUT
The IPFW women's basketball team was limited to just 17 points in the second half which led to an 82-51 loss at South Dakota. The Mastodons are now 6-12 overall with a 2-4 mark in Summit League action.
Four key factors led to Thursday night's outcome as the Coyotes won their eighth game of the season. The Coyotes won the points in the paint battle 40-12, second chance points 22-7, bench points 29-2, and also outrebounded IPFW 43-22.
The Mastodons only trailed by three points at halftime (37-34), but the second half belonged to South Dakota as they outscored IPFW 45-17 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Amanda Hyde scored a game-high 20 points to lead IPFW. Hyde shot 5-for-11 from the floor and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Stefanie Mauk added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds and Haley Seibert poured in nine points, all coming in the first half.
IPFW held a three point lead five minutes into the contest after Rachel Mauk buried a 3-point field goal. The hot shooting from the outside for IPFW would quickly turn cold as the Coyotes went on a 16-0 run after the field goal which put them in front 26-13 with 8:04 to play in the opening half.
IPFW showed toughness on the road as they ended the first half on a 15-3 run in the final 5:37 to cut the South Dakota lead to just three at the half. Amanda Hyde sparked the comeback by scoring eight straight points for the 'Dons.
The start of the second half killed IPFW as the 'Dons gave up a 10-0 run to South Dakota in the opening five minutes of action. South Dakota shot 69 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes giving them the victory.

ON THE ROAD
Winning on the road has been tough for IPFW this season as the Mastodons are currently 1-6 playing away from the Gates Sport Center. The good news for IPFW is that the team is 5-5 when playing during the day compared to 1-7 when playing at night.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Both IPFW and Kansas City have had players honored as Summit League Players of the Week. Kim Nezianya won the award on Nov. 26 for Kansas City, and Amanda Hyde shared the honor along with Eilise O'Connor of Kansas City the very next week (Dec. 3). Hyde won the award for a second time on Dec. 31, and Emile Blakesley gave Kansas City a third player to earn the recognition as she claimed the prize on Dec. 17.
FIRST YEAR COACH
Marsha Frese enters her first season as the head women's basketball coach at Kansas City after accepting the position on April 25, 2012. Frese brings 15 years of experience to the program, first as a player and now as a coach. Frese served as an associate head coach at Northern Illinois and Illinois and was previously an assistant at Ball State, Maryland, and Minnesota.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
The 2012-13 IPFW women's basketball roster does not have a senior on the team. Four juniors and a sophomores create the starting five for the Mastodons.
SUMMIT LEAGUE LEADER
Junior Amanda Hyde leads the Summit League with a scoring average of 19.3 points per game. She most recently dropped 20 points at South Dakota.
FREEBIES
Amanda Hyde and Erin Murphy are the top two free throw shooters in the league. Hyde currently ranks first in the Summit League with a free throw percentage of 86.1. Murphy is right behind her in second with an 86.0 average. Hyde and Murphy rank 47th and 49 nationally which helps IPFW land in sixth as a team (78.4).
UP NEXT
IPFW will return to the Gates Sports Center to play the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Saturday, Jan. 26. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
