FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind a 23-kill, 13-dig double-double from Emily Spencer, the IPFW Mastodons toppled the Omaha Mavericks in four sets on Friday evening by scores of 25-16, 19-, 25 25-9, 26-24.
Spencer, who was honored in the pre-game for reaching 1,000 career kills earlier in the season, finished with 23 kills, while Jadyn' Pegues had 14 kills. Sarah Heckman and Kendall Wienkes had eight and seven kills, respectively. Madison Spence dished out 46 assists, while Wienkes had eight, as she flirted with a triple-double by adding 13 digs as well.
Este Stoffel picked up a career-high 19 digs in the win, leading quintet of players in double figure digs along with Spencer, Wienkes, Madison Spence (15), and Jen Milligan (12). IPFW out-blocked Omaha 11-to-10, and was led by Hailie Ripley, who had six blocks, as Heckman added five and Spence and Spencer four apiece.
Omaha (5-12, 0-2 Summit League) scored first in the match, and the 1-0 lead would be their only of the first set as the Mastodons responded with four straight points, capped by a Stoffel service ace. The Mastodons (8-10, 1-2 Summit) pushed and pulled their way to a three-point lead at 11-8, before three straight IPFW tallies put the hosts ahead 14-8, as the 'Dons then cruised to a 25-16 first-set win.
The second set saw five tie scores and two lead changes; however, the last lead change came after the 'Dons led 5-4, as the visiting Mavericks ran off eight straight points to lead 12-5, and never looked back, as the 'Dons would get only as close as four the rest of the way in the 25-19 Omaha win.
IPFW and Omaha found themselves tied at one, and two, before the 'Dons ran off a 3-0 run, and never trailed again. As the margin stood at three at 8-5, IPFW rattled off 11 consecutive points, including three blocks and a service ace, as the Mavericks exhausted both of its timeouts during the span, as IPFW then cruised to a 25-9 third-set victory.
The teams traded 10 tie scores and five lead changes in the thrilling fourth set, and IPFW led 15-14 after a Pegues kill; however, the visitors ran off a 6-1 run to chase out to a commanding 20-16 advantage. The four-point margin would be the largest of the game for the Mavericks, but IPFW ran off five in a row to take a 21-20 lead.
After an Omaha point due to IPFW shielding (having their arms too high at the net during a serve) knotted the score at 21, the teams also found themselves tied at 22, 23, and 24, before a Spencer kill and an Omaha attack error closed the door, giving IPFW the 26-24 victory.
Kelly Wollack had a team-high nine kills, while Michaela Schimmer had eight to go with a dozen assists and a dozen digs, chasing a triple-double of her own as well.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, October 5, when the team plays host to the Leathernecks of Western Illinois University in a 7 p.m. first serve.
