FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Mastodons made quick work of the visiting South Dakota State as they swept the Jackrabbits 3-0 by identical scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-14.
The 'Dons (16-13, 8-5) were led by Emily Spencer who finished the night with a game-high 14 kills and also made eight digs and had two aces. Somer Johnson added six kills off the bench while Kendall Wienkes, Jaydn' Pegues and Hailie Ripley each finished with five kills.
IPFW took the opening point of the first set and never looked back. The Mastodons used an 8-1 run in the middle of the set to lead 16-6. The two sides exchanged points throughout the rest of the set but the early lead for the 'Dons was more than enough to win the set. IPFW held SDSU to just two kills and a -.148 hitting percentage in the opening set.
The Mastodons would again take the first point of the set as Spencer put down the kill. The Jackrabbits would hang close early on, but once again the 'Dons would go on a run, scoring four straight points to pull away for good. They would later go on another run of eight straight leading 20-9 before closing out the set.
Once again in the third, it would be the 'Dons jumping out to the early lead as they scored the first two points en-route to an 8-2 early advantage forcing a Jacks timeout. IPFW would push their lead to 11 as they scored five straight to lead 16-5. The two sides would exchange points to close out the set as the 'Dons emptied their bench allowing all 15 players to see action. The Mastodons finished the set hitting .667 as they finished with 18 kills and zero errors.
Wienkes finished her night with a season-high five aces from the service line, including three that came back-to-back during the second set. Johnson and Sarah Heckman tied for a game-high three blocks.
Jen Milligan led all players with 13 digs while Madison Spence also finished with a match-high 36 assists.
As a defense, the 'Dons held SDSU to negative hitting percentages in the first two sets and just .025 for the night.
IPFW will close the regular season as they host North Dakota State tomorrow, November 16 for a 7 p.m. match. The Mastodons will also honor their two seniors in Erica Dryden and Jen Milligan.
