FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's volleyball team ended their regular season just the way they began it, with a victory as they swept North Dakota State 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-22) on a night where the 'Dons honored graduating players Erica Dryden and Jen Milligan. The win gave the Mastodons just their second undefeated season at the Gates Sports Center in the 36 year history of the program as they finished the season 11-0. It also assures them of no worse than the fourth seed in the Summit League Tournament.
Emily Spencer and Hailie Ripley led all players with 14 kills on the night. Spencer finished with her 11th double-double of the year as she also led all players with 16 digs. Ripley meanwhile finished with zero attack errors for a .560 hitting percentage and had a match-high four blocks. Kendall Wienkes also added 10 kills for the Mastodons.
Although IPFW took the opening two points of the first set, it was North Dakota State who would lead through most of the opener. The Mastodons would rally back as they took the lead at 20-19. It would be a battle for the final few points but it would be Somer Johnson getting back-to-back kills to give the 'Dons the first set win.
It would start out close in the second set as the score was tied 6-6, but the 'Dons would go on a 9-1 run to open up a 15-7 lead. The Mastodons would push their lead to 10 at 20-10 as they closed out the set to head to the break up two sets.
The Mastodons would take the first two points of the third set as the 'Dons would build to an early 11-5 lead. NDSU would make things interesting as they would get four straight points to cut the IPFW lead to just two at 14-12 and then later cut the 'Dons lead to just one. The Bison would take their first lead of the set 19-18, before the 'Dons answered on a kills by Wienkes and Ripley. With the score tied at 22, the Mastodons would get a kill by Spencer and a second point off a bad set by the Bison to give them match point.
After NDSU called a timeout, it would be Wienkes giving the Mastodons the sweep as she hammered home the final kill of the night.
Milligan finished her final game at home with 10 digs and a service ace. Este Stoffel also made 11 digs on the night.
Madison Spence dished out a match-high 44 assists for IPFW. Johnson and Sarah Hackman each added five kills for the Mastodons.
The 'Dons will now have to wait for the results of tomorrow's matches between South Dakota/Western Illinois and Omaha/Denver to see who they will face in the Summit League Tournament which begins on November 20 in Indianapolis.
