INDIANAPOLIS - The IPFW Mastodons advanced to the 2013 Summit League Tournament Semifinals, sweeping the North Dakota State Bison for the second time in six days by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-13, as senior libero Jen Milligan tied the Summit League three-set record with 25 digs. The Mastodons now take on top seeded IUPUI in a Summit League semi-final at 7 p.m. tomorrow night, November 23.
Milligan's total ties Becky Dreher from Oral Roberts, who had 25 digs in the Golden Eagles' game against the Valparaiso Crusaders.
Emily Spencer knocked down a match-high 14 kills, while Kendall Wienkes added 12. Madison Spence dished out 32 assists, while Wienkes added 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Sarah Heckman led the team with six blocks, while Hailie Ripley chipped in four blocks.
NDSU scored the opening point of the first set, but from there it was all 'Dons as IPFW would score six of the next seven points. The Mastodons would lead things 21-12 before the Bison started to make a comeback as they scored eight of the next 10 points. Holding a 24-20 advantage, Wienkes would put down a rocket serve to give the 'Dons the set.
IPFW had a tough start to the second set as NDSU jumped out to an early 7-1 lead as coach Kelley Hartley Hutton was forced to use two timeouts early on. The 'Dons would respond quickly to coach Hutton's words of inspiration as they scored four straight points before tying the score at 8-8. But, the Bison would go on another run with four straight to lead it 12-9. IPFW would respond by taking the lead for good as they took the next four points to lead 13-12. Late in the set leading 22-19, the 'Dons would get the final three points, two by way of Bison errors.
In the closing set, the 'Dons dropped the opening point but quickly responded with 6-1 run to take the lead for good. Midway through the set, Wienkes served the Mastodons to six straight points as they extended their lead to 16-7 as the Bison never pulled any closer. IPFW led by as many as 11 in the set before Ripley closed out the win with her third kill of the night.
The Mastodon defense held NDSU to an .053 hitting percentage on the night including -.027 in the third set and .000 in the second set.
