FORT WAYNE, Ind. -The IPFW women's volleyball squad made quick work of their in-state rivals IUPUI, sweeping the Jaguars 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-23). The 'Dons kept their home unbeaten streak alive and are now 9-0 in the Gates Sports Center.
IPFW (15-12, 7-5) ended IUPUI's 9-game conference winning streak as the Mastodons remain locked into the fourth spot in the Summit League as Denver defeated South Dakota as well.
Emily Spencer and Kendall Wienkes led the Mastodons with 17 and 16 kills respectively. Spencer ended the night with her 10th double-double of the season adding 13 digs while also leading the 'Dons and trying a season-high with six blocks (two solo).
IPFW jumped out to the early lead as they got a trio of kills leading things 4-1. The Jaguars would battle back to take their first lead at 8-7, before the Mastodons answered with a pair of points to regain the lead. The two sides would battle it out from there as they exchanged points as neither team was able to separate themselves early on. Trailing 16-15, the Mastodons would go on a 5-0 run to take a 20-16 lead and closed out the set on a kill by Somer Johnson.
The two sides again exchanged points to start the second set before the 'Dons took three straight to lead it 8-5. Later, leading by just two at 12-10, IPFW went on a 3-0 run to push their lead to five. The 'Dons would later extend their lead to six, leading it 19-13. After an IUPUI timeout, IPFW came out ready to put the set away as they put down two quick blocks by Heckman and Spencer. It would be Spencer knocking down her 10th kills of the night to close out the set and send the 'Dons into the locker room with a two set lead.
IPFW came out ready to play in the fourth set as they took the opening four points of the set. After IUPUI tied things at 4-4, the 'Dons again went on a roll connecting on four straight points to regain the lead. The 'Dons held the Jaguars at arm's length, as every time they pulled close, IPFW would rattle off a couple of points to extend the lead. IUPUI would tie the score at 19, but IPFW coach Kelley Hartley Hutton used a perfectly placed timeout, as the 'Dons came out scoring the next three points. Although the Jaguars fought back to tie it at 23, the Mastodons got a kills from Ripley and a block from Spencer and Heckman to give IPFW the sweep.
Hailie Ripley had a solid night from the floor for the 'Dons as she finished with seven kills while hitting .467 and adding three blocks. Johnson contributed six kills off the bench while Sarah Heckman added five blocks.
Madison Spence finished the night with a game-high 44 assists while Jen Milligan also had a game-high with 15 digs. Wienkes and Este Stoffel each made eight digs on the night for the Mastodons.
IPFW heads into the final week of the conference season as they host South Dakota State on Friday, November 15 at 7 p.m. and then North Dakota State the following night, also at 7 p.m.
