Mastodons 12th in Nashville after First Day

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Behind a two-under first day at the President's Reserve Course at Hermitage Golf Club, the IPFW Mastodons sit in 12th place at the 2013 Big Blue Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee State University.
IPFW's carded rounds of 299 and 293 to give them a 592 after the first day of competition, 13 strokes out of eighth place in the field. Southern Illinois has set the pace for the teams with a two-round score of 567, while Murray State (569), SIU Edwardsville (569), and Lipscomb (569) sit just behind in the field.
Leading the way for the Mastodon was sophomore Groninger, who shot an even-par 72, his third par or better round this season in the first round, before shooting two-under par with a 70 for a two-round 142, good for a tie of 16th in the field.
Freshman Dan Wert'sfirst round of 73 is a new collegiate best, as he matched it in the second round for a 146.. Freshman Oliver Gibson shot a 76 and an even-par 72, while Drake Devereux' back-to-back 78 rounds closed out the scoring four for the Mastodons. Logan Barker shot an 88 on the first round, and 80 in the second for the Mastodons, who are without their two seniors, Drew Imel and Bruno Carvalho.
The teams return to the course tomorrow for the second and final round, as the Mastodons will look to use this as a tune-up for the 2013 Summit League Championships, held from April 22 through 24 in Keller, Texas at the Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club.
