Spencer Ties Four-Set Record, as 'Dons Fall to Huskies

DeKALB, Ill. - Despite an IPFW four-set record of 29 kills from Emily Spencer, the Mastodons fell in a four-set battle with the Northern Illinois Huskies on Friday evening by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-13.
Spencer's 29 kills ties a career-high, and ties the four-set school record held by Laura Douglas and Fabiana Souza - both members of the IPFW Athletic Hall of Fame - while also climbing into 10th in career school history with 1,189 career kills.
Kendall Wienkes added a dozen kills for IPFW, while adding 10 digs for a double-double. Este Stoffel had a career-high 16 digs for the Mastodons, while Madison Spence had a dozen, and Jen Milligan 11. Spence added her second straight double-double with 44 assists, as Hailie Ripley had a team-high four blocks.
The Mastodons led early in the first set, by as many as three at 12-9, but a 5-0 Northern Illinois run put the hosts ahead 14-12. The Huskie lead grew to as many as five at 23-18 before the 'Dons ran off a comeback attempt, closing to within one at 24-23 on a Spencer kills, but after a NIU timeout, the hosts rallied for a kill to take the first set 25-23.
In the second set, a 25-20 IPFW win, the Mastodons never trailed, despite seeing 10 tie scores, the latest at 13-13 before the Mastodons ran off a 4-1 run to lead 17-14. NIU would only get as close as one the rest of the way, as the 'Dons ran away with a 25-20 second-set victory.
The third set saw 12 tie scores and four lead changes, and with the teams tied at 22, before Northern Illinois ran off a 3-1 run to close the set in a NIU win.
The Huskies scored the first two points of the set, and never looked back, using three different 4-0 runs to run away with a 25-13 fourth-set win.
Sarah Angelos and Mackenzie Roddy led Northern Illinois with 18 and 17 kills, each, as Alexis Gonzalez flirted with a triple double with 50 assists, 10 digs, and seven kills.
The Mastodons close out the Huskie Invitational on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against George Washington.
