DeKALB, Ill. - The IPFW Mastodons snapped a six-match losing skid in a big way, with a dominating sweep of the George Washington Colonials by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 25-23 on Saturday afternoon.
The losing skid was the program's longest since the 1993 squad also lost six in a row. In 1993, the squad rebounded after the losing skid to win 22 of the last 25 games, winning a GLVC Title in the process.
A match after tying the single-match four-set school record for kills, junior Emily Spencer set down a match-high 17 kills, while classmate Kendall Wienkes had 14. Madison Spence dished out 33 assists, while Jen Milligan led the team with nine digs. Spencer had a match-high three solo blocks - and four total blocks in the win.
The Mastodons scored the first three points of the opening set, and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire in the frame. The Colonials fought back to within four at 16-12, but that would be as close as the squad would come in the 25-17 first-set win.
The teams traded points to start the second set before IPFW scored seven straight to open a margin that would only be closed to as few as six in a 25-14 IPFW win.
The third set saw IPFW trail for the first time on the day at 4-3 before IPFW scored six straight to lead 9-4, and never trail again, despite a late fury by the Colonials. With IPFW leading 21-16, George Washington rallied to tie the score at 23 apiece; however back-to-back kills from Spencer and Sarah Heckman closed the door in th ematch.
Kelsey Newman had 14 kills for G.W., while Chidima Osuchukwu led the team with three blocks.
The Mastodons next take to the road for the conference-opening weekend at the University of South Dakota on Friday, September 27, before traveling further west to take on the Denver Pioneers on Sunday, September 29.
