South Dakota Takes Battle of Summit League Leaders

VERMILLION, S.D. - In a battle of the two teams with the best records in the Summit League, the South Dakota State Coyotes came out on top in a sweep of the IPFW Mastodons by scores of 25-18, 26-24, 25-22.
Emily Spencer led the Mastodons with a dozen kills, while Kendall Wienkes had six, and Hailie Ripley five. Madison Spence dished out 27 assists, while Spencer served up a pair of service aces in the contest.
Sarah Heckman led the defense with seven blocks, with Spencer picking up a match-high 13 digs in the loss.
South Dakota (10-6, 1-0 Summit League) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first set; however, IPFW (7-9, 0-1 Summit) answered back with three straight points of their own to tie the score at three. From there, South Dakota ran off a 9-2 run, and never trailed again, winning the opening frame 25-18.
The second set saw the Coyotes score first, but was followed by eight straight Mastodon points which put IPFW ahead 8-1. Leading by seven at 18-11, South Dakota started its comeback, using a 10-4 run to knot the score at 22 apiece.
The Mastodons responded by scoring the next two points on a Wienkes kill and a Heckman and Katie Higginbotham combo block, and sat a point away from the set victory. The hosts would not let the set go easily, scoring the final four points of the set to turn the two-point IPFW lead into a two-point, 26-24, Coyote win.
Using the momentum gained from late in the second set, USD jumped ahead to a 7-1 lead in the first set, and never trailed again, despite a 10-2 IPFW run that cut the deficit to two at 23-21, as the Coyotes held on for a 25-22 deciding set win.
Kendall Kritenbrink knocked down a match-high 17 kills, with Tori Kroll dishing out 34 assists and grabbing a dozen digs. Melissa Firtko led the Coyotes with six digs.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. EST when the squad faces off against the Denver Pioneers in Denver, Colo.
