
Mastodons Drop Second Conference Match of Season

DENVER - In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the Denver Pioneers topped the IPFW Mastodons 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-12), as the Mastodons fell to 0-2 in Summit League play through the first league weekend of the season.
Emily Spencer and Kendall Wienkes each had 10 kills in the loss, while Jadyn' Pegues had eight and Hailie Ripley seven. Madison Spence dished out 27 assists, while Wienkes had four service aces, as Jen Milligan had a match-high 12 digs.
The Mastodons (7-10, 0-2 Summit League) jumped out quickly in the game, leading 8-4 through the match's first 12 points before the hosts rallied with a 10-5 run to lead 15-13. The margin remained two at 18-16 when Denver (8-7, 2-0 Summit) scored four of the next five points, and pushed away late for a 25-19 opening-set win.
Denver led early in the second set at 4-1, before the Mastodons fought back, and tied the score at every numerical increment from three to 12, before Kendall Wienkes ran off three consecutive aces to put the Mastodons ahead 15-12. Facing their largest deficit of the match, Denver answered with five straight points, and never trailed again in the match, winning the middle set 25-21.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the third set, and never looked back, using a 6-0 run to pull away late, winning the third and final set 25-12.
Brea Muhle had 11 kills for the Pioneers, who hit .402 as a team for the match to go with 13 team blocks. Tori Moons had 28 assists, while Colleen King had eight blocks, and Sara Schmid seven.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, October 4, ending a 14-match stretch of road matches with a home match against Omaha at 7 p.m. at the Gates Sports Center.
