Mastodons Fall in Cleveland State Tournament Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The IPFW Mastodons fell in the opening round of the Cleveland State Invitational to the UC Irvine Anteaters (25-15, 25-12, 25-23).
Emily Spencer led the IPFW attack with eight kills, while Kendall Wienkes had six kills to go with her match-high 15 digs. Spencer added 10 digs in the losing effort, while Hailie Ripley had three blocks.
The Anteaters jumped out to a 15-4 lead halfway through the set, and never looked back, taking the opening frame 25-15.
The 'Dons trailed by four at 11-7 midway through the second stanza, before UC Irvine closed the door in the set, out-scoring IPFW 14-5 the rest of the way for the 25-12 second set victory.
IPFW and UC Irvine battled back and forth throughout the third set, with the largest lead by either team coming when the Mastodons took a 12-8 lead halfway through the set, forcing an Anteater timeout. The battle would continue, and with the teams tied at 23, UC Irvine closed strong using back-to-back kills to claim the 25-23 final-set win.
UC Irvine was led by Allison Lee and Aly Squires who had 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Shelby Anderson dished out 21 assists, while Lee added a team-high 13 digs in the win.
The Mastodons take on tournament host Cleveland State at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, before facing High Point later that afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
