Balanced Mastodon Offense Stings Hornets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Six players reached the double-figure scoring plateau, as IPFW out-ran the Kalamazoo Hornets 110-74 on Saturday afternoon. The 110 points are the second-most in IPFW's NCAA Division I era (2001-present), and the 16 three-point field goals are the second-highest total in program history.
The win gives IPFW a record of 12-5, the best 17-game start to a season for IPFW as a member of NCAA Division I, and is tied for the fourth-best start in the entire history of the program.
IPFW set team season-highs in points (110), assists (25), field goal percentage (64.4%), three-point field goal percentage (59.3%), and three-point field goals in the lopsided wins.
Luis Jacobo and Joe Reed each scored 18 points for the Mastodons, while Mo Evans scored 15 points. Isaiah McCray scored 14, with Steve Forbes and Pierre Bland each scoring a dozen.
Bland dished out a career-high nine assists, with Joe Edwards adding five. For the second straight game, Reed was the team leader in rebounding with eight, and IPFW out-rebounded Kalamazoo 33-to-26 in the game.
The teams traded the lead back and forth for the first four minutes of the game, with the Hornets holding an 8-7 lead with 16 minutes to play in the first half. IPFW responded with a 13-2 run to push ahead by 10 on a three-pointer by Evans.
The Hornets closed to within single digits at 24-15 on a three-point basket by Adam Dykema, but the Mastodons added in cushion with an 8-0 run. The margin reached as many as 18 in the first half after a McCray lay-in with 2:14 to play, before the visitors closed the half on a 5-2 run to send the Mastodons into the locker room with a 15-point, 54-39 advantage.
The Mastodons scored the first 10 points of the second half to run the margin to 25, and the hosts never looked back, cruising to the 36-point victory.
IPFW hit 38-of-59 shots in the game, while converting on 16-of-27 from long range, and was 18-of-26 (69.2%) from the charity stripe.
Kalamazoo was led by a career-high 20 points from Dykema, who hit 4-of-7 shots from long range, while Carger Goetz scored 17, and Chase Baysdell 10.
The Mastodons return to action on Thursday, January 9, when the team opens Summit League play with a 7 p.m. tip-off against league preseason favorite North Dakota State at the Gates Sports Center.
