Spencer and Slyder Earn A Double-Double In Loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - It was a tough night for the IPFW women's volleyball team as it fell to IUPUI 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 23-25, 23-25). The loss drops the Mastodons to 9-11 overall on the season and 3-3 in Summit League play.
Somer Johnson led IPFW on the night with 17 kills to go along with a .400 hitting percentage. Emily Spencer finished with 16 kills for her 41st consecutive match in double-digits. Spencer also added her 12th double-double of the season with a team-high 14 digs. Kendall Wienkes capped off her night with nine kills and nine digs.
Mallory Slyder earned the second double-double of her career with 23 assists and 10 digs. She also had a career- and match-high four aces. Madison Spence led the 'Dons with 25 assists. Defensively, Olivia Hahn made 10 digs while Johnson and Natasha Medic led the Mastodons with three blocks each.
IUPUI opened the first set with a 4-1 advantage, as IPFW was unable to overcome the early deficit. The 'Dons turned it around in the second set as they never trailed after jumping out to a 9-4 lead.
The Mastodons scored the first five points of the third set before the Jaguars tied the score at 13-13. IPFW held a late one-point lead, but IUPUI responded with three consecutive points to take the set.
In the fourth, the two sides battled through 10 tie scores as neither team led by more than three points. With the score tied 16-16, a three-point swing in favor of the Jags gave them the lead for good. The 'Dons closed the gap to one at 24-23 before IUPUI scored the final point.
IPFW return to the Gates Center on October 17 to face Summit League leader Denver at 7 p.m.
