FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's volleyball team nearly pulled off a comeback after trailing Denver 2-0, before eventually falling 3-2 (25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 15-10). The Mastodons are now 9-12 on the season and 3-4 in Summit League play.
Emily Spencer led the 'Dons with 20 kills for her 42nd consecutive match in double figures. She also finished the night with 13 digs for her 65th career double-double. Kendall Wienkes earned her seventh double-double of the season with 13 digs and 12 kills. Somer Johnson finished the match with 15 kills and three aces while Sarah Heckman added a season-high 11 kills.
Mallory Slyder led the Mastodons with 31 assists to go along with nine digs and a match-high four aces. Defensively, Anna Wrede led all players with nine blocks, three of which were solo. Heckman, Wienkes, and Madison Spence all added three blocks in the match. Olivia Hahn helped the effort with 10 digs while Este Stoffel made nine.
IPFW jumped out to an early lead in the first set, but with the score tied 12-12, the Pioneers scored the next two points to gain a lead they would not relinquish. With the score tied 10-10 in the second set, Denver rattled off four consecutive points as the 'Dons were unable overcome the deficit.
The Pioneers led early in the third set, but this time it would be the Mastodons who made the rally, scoring five straight points to take an 11-10 lead and eventually the set. The fourth set was nearly identical for IPFW as it rallied from an early deficit with a four-point swing to take the lead for good and force a decisive fifth set.
With the score tied 4-4 in the final frame, Denver recorded consecutive points to take the lead for good. The 'Dons fought until the end, pulling within one at 11-10, but the Pioneers closed the match with four straight points.
As a team, the Mastodons combined for 11 aces on the night, the most since they finished with 11 against Cornell on September 11, 2010.
IPFW returns to the court for its annual Pink Out match on October 18 against North Dakota State at 7 p.m.
