Spencer and Johnson Lead 'Dons In PinkOut Match Victory

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind a career-high 20 kills from Somer Johnson and 23 digs by Emily Spencer, the IPFW women's volleyball team defeated North Dakota State during its annual PinkOut match 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-14).
Johnson and Spencer each finished with 20 kills on the night to lead the Mastodons, who are now 10-12 on the season and 4-4 in The Summit League. Spencer earned her 14th double-double of the season and finished her 43rd consecutive match in double-digit kills. Kendall Wienkes picked up 11 kills on the night while Sarah Heckman added 10. Heckman also led the 'Dons with a match-high five blocks, including two solo. Freshman Natalie Seiler picked up her first career kill in the fourth set.
Mallory Slyder finished the night with a match-high 30 assist to go along with 11 digs for her third career double-double. Madison Spence added 22 assists for IPFW. Olivia Hahn made 13 digs in the match while Este Stoffel added 11.
After a couple of early lead changes in the opening set, the Bison used a four-point swing to take a 7-4 lead for good. With the score tied 15-15 in the second set, IPFW went on a roll, out-scoring NDSU 10-3 to take the frame.
Trailing 14-12 in the third, the Mastodons used an 8-2 run to take the lead and the set. With the score tied 7-7 in the fourth set, IPFW rattled off five straight points to notch the victory.
The 'Dons held North Dakota State to a season-low four blocks while IPFW made 12 blocks, the most by a Summit League team against the Bison. The 64 kills by the Mastodons are the most by any team this season against NDSU.
IPFW returns to action on October 21 as it hosts Western Michigan for a 7 p.m. match.
