FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Emily Spencer moved into second place on the all-time IPFW women's volleyball kill list as the Mastodons dropped a non-league match to Western Michigan, 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-9).
Spencer passed Laura Douglas (1,904) early in the first set, and ended her night with 11 kills for a new career total of 1,914. Spencer led all players with three aces in the match while adding eight digs. Sarah Heckman and Kendall Wienkes led the 'Dons on the night with 12 kills each. Wienkes led the team with nine digs while Heckman led the way with four blocks.
Mallory Slyder led IPFW with 23 assists while Madison Spence dished out 19.
The Mastodons began the match by scoring six consecutive points. Western Michigan slowly began to chip away at the IPFW lead before tying the score at 16-16. The 'Dons scored the next three points as they took the opening set.
The roles were reversed in the second set, as it was WMU jumping out to the early lead. IPFW fought its way back tying the score 17-17. The Broncos scored four of the next five points to tie the match at a set apiece.
With the score tied 7-7 in the third set, Western Michigan used a four-point run to break the tie and take the set. The Broncos began the fourth set on an 11-2 run that the Mastodons were unable to recover from.
IPFW returns to the court on October 24 for a road trip to IUPUI at 7 p.m.
