Volleyball Falls At Home To Leathernecks

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Somer Johnson's match-high 15 kills were not enough as the IPFW women's volleyball team fell to Summit League rival Western Illinois 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 25-18).
Johnson led IPFW with a .333 hitting percentage and made four blocks on the afternoon, two of which were solo. Emily Spencer led the Mastodons with eight digs and improved her program record to 46 consecutive matches in double-digit kills with 11. Sarah Heckman added nine kills while Natasha Medic had six. Medic also led the team with five blocks.
Madison Spence led the 'Dons with 21 assists as Mallory Slyder dished out 17. Spencer, Heckman, and Slyder all had two aces as IPFW combined for nine total aces in the match.
The first set saw a back-and-forth battle between the teams, fighting through 14 tie scores, and exchanging 10 leads. Neither team led by more than two points in the set, but it was the Leathernecks who scored the final three points to win the opening frame.
Trailing 15-14 in the second set, the Mastodons used an 8-1 advantage to tie the match at a set apiece. Western Illinois jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the third set as the 'Dons were unable to close the gap. The Leathernecks opened the fourth with a 4-0 lead before going on to take the set and the match.
IPFW returns to action on October 31 for an 8 p.m. match at South Dakota.
