Mastodons Drop Road Match at South Dakota
10/31/2014 11:26:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
VERMILLION, S.D. - The IPFW women's volleyball team dropped a road match to co-league leader South Dakota 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18).
Emily Spencer led the Mastodons with a match-high 23 kills and added nine digs. Spencer improved her school record to 47 consecutive matches with double-digit kills. Somer Johnson capped off her night with 15 kills while Sarah Heckman added 10 of her own.
Madison Spence earned her second career double-double with 46 assists and 12 digs. Kendall Wienkes and Mallory Slyder each finished in double figure digs with 12 and 11, respectively. Anna Wrede led all players with a match-high seven blocks.
The Mastodons opened the first set with a 4-0 advantage. South Dakota answered midway through taking a 19-17 lead, but IPFW rallied back closing it out on a 7-2 run. An early 13-4 Coyote lead in the second set was too much for the 'Dons to overcome late as the match was tied 1-1 at intermission.
USD led from the opening point of the third set to take the frame. The Mastodons lead early in the fourth set 6-5, but a three-point swing in favor of the Coyotes gave them the lead for good to take the set and the match.
IPFW returns to action on November 2 at Oral Roberts for a 1 p.m. match.
