Volleyball Drops Tough Road Match To Leathernecks

MACOMB, Ill. - It wasn't the start to the weekend the IPFW women's volleyball team had hoped for as the Mastodons dropped a tough road match to Western Illinois 3-0 (29-27, 28-26, 25-14).
Emily Spencer led IPFW (7-9/1-1) with a match-high 15 kills and 17 digs. Kendall Wienkes added seven digs and six kills for the 'Dons. Natasha Medic, Sarah Heckman, and Somer Johnson all contributed with five kills, respectively. Medic also led the Mastodons with four blocks.
Mallory Slyder led IPFW with 19 assists on the night while Madison Spence dished out 13.
The two teams exchanged nine leads throughout the opening set as Western Illinois had set point at 24-20. The Mastodons clawed their way back with a 5-0 run to get a set point of their own. Later, with the 'Dons leading 27-26, the Leathernecks closed out the set with three straight points.
Midway through the second set, IPFW used on a 7-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. Western Illinois made a run of its own late in the set to snatch the victory away from the 'Dons. The Mastodons held an early third set lead, but the Leathernecks closed it out with a 16-4 advantage to take the set and the match.
IPFW returns to the Gates Center on September 5 for a 1 p.m. match with South Dakota.
