Wienkes Earns 1,000 Career Dig In Loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Kendall Wienkes earned her 1,000 career dig, while Somer Johnson and Mallory Slyder earned a pair of double-doubles as the IPFW women's volleyball team fell to Summit League foe South Dakota 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21). The Mastodons are now 7-10 overall on the season and 1-2 in The Summit League.
Offensively, IPFW was led by Emily Spencer who finished with 15 kills for her 38th consecutive match in double figures. Johnson earned her third career double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs, while hitting .412 on the afternoon.
Wienkes became the 18th player in IPFW history to record 1,000 career digs, finishing the afternoon with seven. She led all players with three aces and added seven kills. Freshman Lauren Hoffman earned her first career kill as a Mastodon in the third set.
Slyder netted her first career double-double with 19 assists and a career-high 12 digs. Madison Spence also dished out 19 assists on the day.
Trailing 13-7 in the opening set, IPFW rattled off nine consecutive points to take a 16-13 lead. The Coyotes answered back as they closed out the set on a 4-2 advantage.
The 'Dons led late in the second set at 20-17, but an 8-1 South Dakota run gave them the two set advantage. With the score tied 19-19 in the third set, USD caught fire at the end, out-scoring the Mastodons 6-2 to take the victory.
The next IPFW match is scheduled for September 10 against Oral Roberts in the Gates Center, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
