Spencer's 25 Kills Help Mastodons Clip Golden Eagles

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind 25 kills from Emily Spencer, the IPFW women's volleyball team held off a late charge by Oral Roberts to win 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24). The Mastodons improve their record to 8-10 on the season and 2-2 in Summit League play.
Spencer earned her 62nd career double-double, capping off the night with 25 kills, 14 digs, and five blocks. She also hit a team-high .364 from the floor. Somer Johnson added 10 kills and a pair of solo blocks for IPFW. Kendall Wienkes finished her night with 12 digs, eight kills, and a match-high three aces. Sarah Heckman made a match- and season-high eight blocks to go along with five kills. Natasha Medic aided the defensive effort with a season-high five blocks, including a career-high three solo blocks, while adding four kills.
Madison Spence led the Mastodons with 24 assists on the night while Mallory Slyder dished out 23 and made nine digs.
After Oral Roberts jumped out to the early lead in the first set, four consecutive points by The Mastodons gave them the lead for good. With the score tied 9-9 in the second set, IPFW used a 6-1 run to pull ahead and take the 2-0 lead.
The third set saw the score tied 11 times while the two sides exchanged five leads. With the 'Dons leading 16-14, the Golden Eagles rallied with a 6-1 run to force a fourth set.
IPFW found itself in an early hole in the fourth frame, trailing Oral Roberts by eight points, 14-6. The Mastodons fought back, going on several streaks including 6-0 and 5-0 runs. The Golden Eagles answered back with a 4-0 run of their own to lead 20-18. After an ORU service error made the score 25-24, Wienkes came up clutch for the Mastodons, delivering her 30th ace of the season to give IPFW the victory.
As a team, the 'Dons finished the match with a season-high six solo blocks. The 16 total blocks by IPFW are the most allowed by the Golden Eagles this season. The Mastodons held Oral Roberts leading attacker, Laura Milos, to a four-set season-low 10 kills.
IPFW next heads to Omaha for a 1 p.m. match on October 12.
