Mastodon Rally Comes Up Just Short In Final Home Match

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After dropping the first two sets of its final home match of the season, the IPFW women's volleyball team fought back to force a fifth set, before falling to Valparaiso 3-2 (25-20, 25-17, 19-25, 20-25, 16-14).
Emily Spencer earned her 17th double-double of the season with 23 kills and 10 digs. She also added four blocks and a pair of aces. Spencer not only improved her school record to 51 consecutive matches in double-digit kills, but also moved into first place on the Division I active career kill list with 2,046.
Somer Johnson ended her night with a career-high 21 kills. Sarah Heckman added seven kills and five blocks.
Madison Spence dished out a match-high 53 assists for the 'Dons while Kendall Wienkes led the team with 17 digs and three aces. Defensively, Anna Wrede posted her second consecutive match with nine blocks and Este Stoffel made 12 digs.
Trailing 11-7 in the first set, a five-point run by the Mastodons gave them a lead. The Crusaders answered with a 6-0 run as the 'Dons were unable to make a second rally. IPFW led early in the second set at 2-1 but Valparaiso again made a run, scoring five straight points to take the frame.
Tied 4-4 in the third, the 'Dons made an 11-2 run to win the set. In the fourth set with the score tied 8-8, IPFW utilized an 8-3 advantage to lead 16-11. Valpo answered with 4-0 run to pull within one, but the Mastodons pulled away in the end to force the final set.
After the Crusaders used a 5-1 run to take the lead in the decisive fifth set, the 'Dons fought their way back to tie the score at 14-14. However, Valparaiso scored the next two points to snatch the set and the match.
IPFW begins its final regular season weekend at North Dakota State on November 14 with first serve set for 8 p.m.
