Mastodons Fall in Battle with Crusaders, 75-72
12/20/2014 10:10:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons and Valparaiso Crusaders battled back-and-forth for the entire 40 minutes of play on Saturday evening, with a game-tying three-point attempt bouncing off the rim, as the Crusaders edged out the Mastodons by a 75-72 score in front of 1,249 fans at the Gates Sports Center.
The Mastodons put all five of their starters in double figures, led by Isaiah McCray's 17 points, while Joe Edwards scored 14, Joe Reed 13, and 12 each from Max Landis and Mo Evans. Evans and Edwards each dished out five assists, while McCray had a trio of steals. Evans led the team with seven rebounds, while Reed chipped in six.
Overall, the Mastodons hit half of their 50 shots in the game, and half of the teams' 20 three-point attempts. Valparaiso made 46.7 percent of its shots from the field; however, shot 13-of-25 (52.0%) from long range. Playing without starting center and preseason All-League honoree Steve Forbes, the Mastodons were out-rebounded 29-to-28.
IPFW jumped out quickly to start the game, scoring the first five points before the Crusaders answered right back with five of their own. The Mastodons answered back with nine straight to lead 14-5 with 14:22 to play after a Joe Edwards lay-in.
Valparaiso chipped away at the lead, eventually taking a one-point advantage - the team's first of the game - with 8:22 to play; however, that would be the only time in the first half that the visitors would lead, with IPFW taking a nine-point, 42-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Crusaders came out of the break firing on all cylinders, out-scoring the Mastodons 13-3 to start the half, taking a one-point lead, three and a half minutes into the second period.
From there it was a back-and-forth effort, with the largest team gained by either squad would be six, when Valparaiso led 73-67 with 2:24 to play.
Trailing by six with two minutes to play, IPFW scored five straight points on a lay-in by Evans and a three-point play by McCray to cut the gap to one with a minute to play. After forcing a miss and defensive rebound, the Mastodons turned the ball over, and were forced to foul. Down by one, Valparaiso's Alec Peters sank both of his free throw attempts to give the visitors a three-point advantage. Max Landis' three-point attempt rimmed out at the final horn, securing the three-point win for the Crusaders.
Peters - Valparaiso's leading scorer coming into the game - scored a game-high 23 points. All of his points came in the second half, after playing just nine first-half minutes due to foul trouble. Keith Carter scored 18 points, while Vashil Fernandez scored eight to go with six blocked shots.
The Mastodons return to action on the road against Illinois State on December 22 in a 7 p.m. ET tip-off.
